Maya Rodriguez, FCAS
Chief Actuary — ShieldPoint Insurance
About Maya
Maya Rodriguez joined ShieldPoint Insurance in 2017 as Senior Actuary and was appointed Chief Actuary in 2020. She leads the company's actuarial, pricing, and predictive analytics teams, with responsibility for rate development, reserving, and risk modeling across all personal lines products.
Before ShieldPoint, Maya spent eight years at regional and national insurance carriers, working in personal auto and homeowners pricing. She earned her Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) — the highest actuarial designation in property and casualty insurance — through a rigorous examination process covering ratemaking, reserving, and actuarial standards of practice.
Credentials and Professional Background
The FCAS designation is conferred by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) upon candidates who pass a series of comprehensive examinations and meet professional experience requirements. Fellows are subject to the CAS Code of Professional Conduct and the Actuarial Standards of Practice (ASOPs) issued by the Actuarial Standards Board.
Maya holds a B.S. in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is an active member of the Casualty Actuarial Society and has spoken at CAS seminars on the application of machine learning in personal lines ratemaking.
Approach to Actuarial Practice
Maya believes actuarial work at an insurtech should be both technically rigorous and practically accessible. 'Our job is to price risk fairly,' she says, 'so that policyholders pay rates that reflect their actual risk profile, and so that ShieldPoint can keep its promises when claims happen.' Her team works closely with product, claims, and engineering to ensure pricing models are sound, compliant with state regulatory requirements, and understandable to the people they affect.
