What's Covered
A standard ShieldPoint homeowners policy includes several types of protection. Coverage details, limits, and exclusions vary by policy form and state. Always refer to your policy documents for complete terms and conditions.
Dwelling Coverage
Covers the structure of your home — walls, roof, foundation, built-in appliances — against covered perils such as fire, wind, hail, and vandalism. Coverage is based on the estimated cost to rebuild your home, not its market value.
Other Structures
Covers structures on your property that are separate from your home, such as a detached garage, fence, or shed, for covered perils.
Personal Property Coverage
Covers your belongings — furniture, electronics, clothing — if they're damaged or destroyed by a covered peril, whether the loss occurs at home or elsewhere. Standard coverage is typically on an actual cash value basis; replacement cost coverage is available as an upgrade. Certain high-value items (jewelry, art, collectibles) may have sublimits; scheduled personal property coverage is available for these items.
Liability Coverage
Covers you if someone is injured on your property or you accidentally damage someone else's property, and you're found legally responsible. Includes coverage for legal defense costs up to your policy limit.
Medical Payments to Others
Covers minor medical expenses for guests injured on your property, regardless of fault, up to the coverage limit.
Additional Living Expenses (Loss of Use)
If a covered loss makes your home temporarily uninhabitable, this coverage helps pay for hotel stays, restaurant meals, and other increased living costs while your home is being repaired.
Important Exclusions
Standard homeowners policies do not cover all types of damage. Key exclusions include:
- Flood damage — Damage caused by flooding, surface water, storm surge, or sewer backup is not covered under a standard homeowners policy. Flood insurance is available separately through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) or private insurers.
- Earthquake damage — Damage caused by earthquakes, earth movement, or land subsidence is not covered under a standard homeowners policy. Earthquake coverage may be available as a separate policy or endorsement depending on your state.
- Maintenance and wear — Damage resulting from normal wear and tear, neglect, or gradual deterioration is not covered.
- Intentional acts — Damage you intentionally cause is not covered.
This is not a complete list of exclusions. Please review your policy carefully to understand what is and is not covered.
Optional Coverages
Depending on your state and underwriting eligibility, you may be able to add:
- Replacement cost coverage for personal property
- Scheduled personal property (for jewelry, art, instruments, etc.)
- Water backup and sump overflow coverage
- Home systems protection
- Identity fraud expense coverage
